Running

I started jogging after work recently as i wanted to get my mind off things and maybe lose some weight.

First time i jogged, was the first in some years since ive used my track shoes. Track shoes were bought in my US tour in Dec 2002 for merely US$25. But it's quite a funky design and i love it.

Photobucket

When i put on my shoes after such a long time, the side straps came out. Thank goodness, the entire shoe's like a glove, so i could still run after removing the laces.

Photobucket

After that, i decided to go buy another pair.

I remember being one of 24 people in Singapore in 1992 to own the Nike Air 180.

Has it been worth it?

You give it a lot of thought.

You wonder if you need her in your life.

You've done without her in your life so far and it's been fine.

You consider for a long time. Is this right? Is this the right decision? Are you ready for this step?

You buy things to make her happy, hoping that if she's happy you become happy too.

At the end of the day, it's not about the money. You'd have bought her the world if she wanted it. It's about the commitment.

You worry if it'll end up with nothing. Will it be a headache, heartache or immense joy?

You wonder if it'd bring you the immense joy that you, your mother, your father, your sister have been waiting for.

Is it worth it? You cant tell till you make the next step.

You realise that the word "worth" pops up more often than others. It's a question of worth because in all things there's a cost and benefit and you jus have to weigh it, consider it, analyse it to make sure the joy you feel is more than the risk you're taking.

So many things you'd have to consider before you hire a maid.

Today I’ve Lost You - Take That

Driving home in my car, nearly midnight
Rain on the road in my view
Holes in my heart, it’s the first night without you
On my clothes I still smell your perfume

Should i call?
When I left you were crying
Is it too late to apologise
From talking to fighting, admitting, denying
To finally saying goodbye

Now I regret every word that was spoken
I said some things you know I didn’t mean
Maybe we’ll turn back the time
Work it out, start anew
Or maybe today I’ve lost you

I can’t help but think of our last conversation
I close my eyes I can still see your face
I hope what I’m feeling now
You are feeling it too
Or maybe today I’ve lost you

Driving faster out on this empty road
Being single’s so bad at twenty-three
Looking for signs, asking strangers directions
When the answer’s right in front of me

Strange how a day it can feel like a lifetime
I know what I had now it’s gone
Ive swallowed my pride cos alone here, I’m dying
And with you is where I belong

For twenty-four hours I’ve been searching for reasons
Reasons why we should be living apart
Hope I’m not too late to come home
Work it out, start anew
Or maybe today I’ve lost you

maybe today, I’ve lost you
maybe today, I’ve lost you

Bali

I actually went on a day trip to Bali yesterday.

And im back in the office today.

My super duper ultra big boss asked me which part of the island I went.

With my limited drawing skills, I drew a map of Bali for him.

This looks like someone’s testicles man.

I hurriedly went out of his room to print a proper map when he looked confused.

Carz

I went to my boss's room today and saw that he placed the car i gave him on this mantle place he has in his room.

Look at how proudly it stands.

Until you step further back and see the kick-ass models already there.

Compliments

I have been complimented for various things before. But I never thought I'd receive one like this from my boss after last week's conference in Shanghai. Definitely not my chinese speaking abilities.

"I just wanted to congratulate you on the great job you did at the conference, without your chinese speaking capabilities it would have been much harder. So GREAT JOB!"

Conference

Going to this conference that my ex-company hosts gave an odd sense of familiarity. Odd feeling cos I've gone to this conference ever since its inception and it's the first time I am attending this as an outsider.

My former boss came to introduce himself to my current boss and it was an awkward moment for me. Current thanked Former for letting Current have me, while Former said it was only a loan. Kinda weird moment there.

There were several cocktails and dinners during the conference and we were shuttled by buses from hotel to hotel, depending on where the coctails/dinners were held. I caught this sign as i was walking to the shuttle bus.

IHG stands for InterContinental Hotels Group. Haha.. this was a funny one.

I brought tons of brochures and even more namecards. It was a tough time trying to explain what my company was in Mandarin. I spoke so much Mandarin that i got a headache in the first two days. Gave away all of them and now i have this much namecards to reply to.

Hopefully i get a deal or two out of these buggers.

On a happier note, I managed to catch up with my pretty Shanghai friend. I've now known her for 3 years now and she was literally my first work friend. It's fun to see how we've grown into our roles.

Hangzhou

I did a day trip to Hangzhou when i was in Shanghai.

上有天堂,下有苏杭。(i'm very good at chinese proverbs, as evidenced here). I've been wanting to go Hangzhou for a long time.

It was a long long journey..

1. 45 mins to the train station to my hotel

The train station was packed at 9am man.

Photobucket

2. 1.5 hour journey to Hangzhou

I called my ex-colleague to ask how to get to Hangzhou. Coincidentally, she was there at the same time! Haha.. she mistakenly took the el cheapo RMB15 (S$3) train which takes 3 hrs and there was no allocated seats. So she stood for one hour until she got a seat. For RMB 50 (S$10), i got a seat and the journey was 1.5 hours.

3. 2 hour car ride to Thousand Islet Lake.

It was raining the entire day which made the pictures bad..but the fogginess added to the mystique of the place.

Illness

I think i have an illness.

No matter how late i arrive back from a trip, I'd unpack everything, dirty clothes, toiletries, work files, accessories, etc before i go shower and sleep.

No matter how long the flight is.

It's 2:30am now and im glad to be back.

Shanghai

Came to the conference my ex company hosts every year. But this time I'm here as a delegate. In the past, we used to all squeeze in a serviced apartment to save costs.

Now i finally get to stay in the hotel where the conference is held. So nice.

Photobucket

Photobucket

It isnt that obvious here but the cupboard opens both ways: one side opens into the toilet, and the other side opens at the doorway. Very convenient.

Photobucket

It's an 88 storey building. Scary!

Photobucket

Photobucket

I was famished after my flight and ordered these... yummy.. but they had 10 xiao long bao...

Then i just had this for lunch... nice soup!

Help

I actually recently got some part-time help for my mum. She comes in once a week to clean up the house and help out here and there. This lady came highly recommended by someone i felt is a little too picky and anal for her own good. So i trust her opinion on things like these.

After the first time she came, she wanted my mum to buy the following:

1. A stronger vaccuum cleaner
2. A stronger iron
3. Some special table cloth she recommended

We bought #1 and #2 before her second visit and she helped us buy #3.

On a second visit, she wanted us to buy:

1. A better ironing board.

I didnt manage to buy an ironing board before her third visit.

On her third visit (today), she suggested that my mum bought a cupboard to store the excess clothes we have.

Siong man.

Cards

Just got my order of 2 boxes of name cards for an upcoming conference i'm attending.

Means i wont be getting promoted anytime soon i guess.

Vicious Spiral

It’s strange how one thing can lead to another.

I actually went to Watson’s to get pore packs.

Then ended up getting batteries for my wireless keyboard. Wanted to get 4 pieces only (S$7.05) but then 8 pieces cost S$10.50. More worth it.

Then while paying, saw this two-bottle dettol promotion. Original price is S$15.50 and then now is S$11.80 if I bought more than S$15 at Watson’s.

Bought them all.

Cant think of a nice title

My mum’s happy that my that uncle won S$10,000. His daughter’s in uni and could use with some extra dough. He's very thrifty. Handphone screen spoilt never change. My mum told me to buy him one.

Coincidentally, DBS ibanking has that fab offer with 40% off Samsung phones. I waited till 31 March before ordering cos I wanted to pay till payday. Then I realised deadline was 31 March and the payment website doesn’t work with Mac and Vista (office laptop) and then was panicking cos I cant get my 40% off deal.

I finally managed to in the end. And now he won S$10,000.

I hope good things come to good people.

Digital Aged

It was a flurry of activity in my house last night. I came home late cos I went to get a PSP. I was supposed to stay out later to wait for my mum who was supposed to go to town to pick up my cousin’s maid to come stay at my house cos my cousin’s going on holiday.

After some change in plans, the maid no more coming liaoz. So I went home.

When I came home, my mum was yakking on the phone cos my aunty won second prize in 4-d (or toto). W00t S$2,000. And then another uncle called to say he won first prize!!!! W00t w00t w00t w00t w00t S$10,000! Happy like bird. My mum was very happy and yet half sianz cos apparently she saw the winning number on a car license plate together with my uncle when they visited my aunty (same one who won second prize - very complicated). But she was too lazy to buy in the end. She was nonetheless happy.

In the short window of time my house phone was available, my cousin (the one with the maid) called to say that she’s getting a cab to send her maid to my house. Asked me to take down the taxi number so that we can go down and pick her.

My mum hurriedly took down the numbers to buy in the next 4-d!!

In other news, PSP is very difficult to play.

PSP

Just bought a PSP.

Increasingly more things in my room is white.

My Mac's white.

My keyboard's white.

My ipod's white.

Bought an ipod speaker cum radio that's white too recently.

Nothing

Have you ever had that feeling that NOTHING you do seem right? NOTHING.

Bread Talk

Ever since I joined my company, I’ve developed an obsession.

Subway sandwiches.

It started one day when I felt like losing some weight. And then BHAM!

I’m eating it everyday.

And every day’s the same thing:

Bread: Parmesan Oregano
Size: 6 inches
Filling: Meatball Marinara
Vegetables: Lettuce, tomatoes, onions
Sauce: Sweet onion

One day, I felt hungrier than usual. Decided to have a cookie as well. After some trial and error, white macadamia nut cookie is the da best. It’s now the de-facto snack which I eat at around 4pm at the office.

Things I don’t understand

Things I don’t understand:

1. Why do we spend about S$400 on an ipod and then spend S$30 on stickers to protect it?
2. Why do we spend money buying expensive shoes and then have to spend more money to go to a cobbler in Bishan to add a rubber sole?
3. Why do we cut our hair when they’re going to fall off anyway?
4. Why do nails have to grow?
5. Why are toenails so difficult to cut?

Hope

Hope springs eternal.

It look me a long while to understand what that means. Because hope is not a tangible object, how can it do such an animated action like "spring"?

But supposedly it means that hope is eternal.

I actually like Mondays. Mondays give the hope of a new start. A clean slate to do what you didnt manage to do/didnt do properly/screwed up the previous week.

I hate tuesdays cos by then you know how your Monday went. And it's four more days to weekend.

So i like Mondays. This Monday, i went to work with the hope that it was better than last week. Last week was a damn bad week. And the previous week was bad too. Actually the week from 3 March and 7 March was quite possibly the worst week in my life. It was so bad and not funny that i didnt wanna blog about it.

And it spirals.

This week, i had a cut that simply wont heal. It just didnt clot and it stained a few of my shirts in the meantime.

Im so stressed up that my hairdresser told me this week that my hair's thinner. SHIT.

I cant be bothered to type anymore.

I feel snappy and I feel irritated.

I hope this week turns for the good.

Carz

It's my boss's birthday in the second week of April.

I deliberated on whether i should get him something. My company has a daily morning meeting where we would celebrate any birthdays, if any. So i cannot pretend not to know.

My boss is a millionaire and he drives a Ferrari. There's no decent present I can get him within the budget i had in mind.

It's times like this which you have to use the "sweet and warm with a el cheapo gift" approach rather than the "shock and awe with an opulent gift" approach. Much like JC boys getting a gift for Friendship Day.

I got him this.

S$5.95 if you pump petrol at Shell.

Speaking about cars, there was a BMW roadshow the mall near my office. Went to check out the cars cos i had a quick lunch. The cars are so sweet! 18" rims run flat tyres, 2l engine and a whole lot of other things i didnt really understand.

Entry level model costs S$132,000.

When can i buy one?

Weak End

A lonesome weekend with no dvds to watch.

Decided to get some at the dvd place.

40 year old virgin. How apt.

Used

Everyone hates to feel used.

It hurts when you actually care.

I just hate it when people asks you for favours or come to you for a listening ear. And then when the favours are given and ears have listened, they dont have the courtesy to answer your questions. DONT HAVE!

It took a herculean effort to stop myself from saying something nasty.

Health is Wealth

Health is wealth.

It's so so so damn cliched but it's so true.

Money can buy health to a certain extent but sometimes it cannot.

Ailments baffle and confound and sadden.

Sigh.

I hope my uncle and my sis get well soon.

Lost

My colleague remarked today that she thinks i make a good actor.

"Why?" I asked.

"Cos you always walk so slowly like you own the road. And you also look so cool and deep in thought"

"...."

(I actually dont know if i need to put inverted commas betwen the dot dot dots. You cant quote something when you dont say anything)

The truth of the matter is that i sometimes feel lost at work. There are just days when I feel like the world's spinning round and round and I have no idea what's going on and oh well.. im too lazy to continue..

Have a good weekend.

Naughty Video

Check this out.

http://dothetest.co.uk/

T|ny sent this to me.

My company showed this once to talk about the lesson of... well, you'll know when you see the video.

Expensive Tea

I was doing my expense claims and saw this receipt where I paid for meeting some clients for tea.

2 pots of camomile tea @S$18 each
1 glass of orange juice @ S$9.

Total after s/c and GST = S$52.97.

Phew that was expensive!

Hunted

A headhunter called me yesterday. Said there was a position in Vietnam that was “very suitable” for me. Asked me to send her my resume. After chatting her for some time, I realised that she actually called me a couple of weeks back saying she’s from a trade magazine asking about what my company and I did in Vietnam.

I replied with this email this morning.

Hi XXXXXX

After thinking it through I decided that I’m not interested in the position.

Thank you for your time.

Say, do you also work for a trade publication that has a focus on Vietnam? I thought I spoke to someone from a trade magazine whose voice sounded very similar to yours with regards to what I did for Vietnam.

Best Regards,
XXXXXX

Possibly One of the Worst Way to Start the Week

Quite possibly one of the worst ways to start the week. I'm not in a hurry to outdo this one.

I have a conference call at 8am on Monday morning. US boss in the US, client in Sydney and I'm in Singapore :(

Sianz.

Woke at 6:30am.

YAWN

Left my house at 7:15am.

ECP jammed from Tanah Merah entrance!!! TANAH MERAH ENTRANCE LEH!!!

7:30am - Emailed US boss to say i'll be late for the call.

8am - Havent passed Bedok. Called the dial-in number. I'm the moderator.

8:15am - Passed the seven (SEVEN!!!)-vehicle accident

8:16am - ZOOOOMED off from Bedok. US boss complained too much background noise from my car (stupid mitsubishi engine and yokohama tires). Muted my phone.

8:40am - Reached office car park. Entered lift. Disconnected from call.

8:45am - Called in the dial-in line. Only to realise every (EVERY!!!!!) one else got d/c cos I (the MODERATOR) disconnected!@!@

8:46am till end of call - Felt like an idiot.

Call ended at 10:30am. Late for my 9:30am meeting. Shit. Left my desk to find my Singapore boss to explain why im late.

10:45am - Came back to my desk to see voice mail light lit up.

10:47am - Listened to voicemail left by US boos " Where the hell are you? Went to the washroom after the call? Call me back"

10:49am - Called back. Listened on how i should have my documents in front of me during conference calls. How i shouldnt do conference calls in the car.

10:55am - Explained myself but feeling stupid at the same time.

:(

Snippets

"Snippets" is one of those blog entries that almost every blog would have at some point. Basically it just means that the blogger doesnt have much happening in his/her life but he just wants to blog.

Someone was trying to be funny again when he parked right beside me on Friday. Thankfully i was a little more alert and wasnt fooled into trying to open his boot.

It was a lazy Saturday that included a facial appointment. Once again, removed so many blackheads that my head feels lighter. And then when i'm bored, I'd go over to the Tailor. Anyway I had to do a fitting for my suit, which i made then. As usual it was super duper crowded, more so cos it was a saturday. Decided to take a picture for my readers. There's this rare pretty girl in the shop today. Alone. She looked totally lost sia.. all the people there were either couples (gf there to help bfs choose materials) or single guys like me (no gfs to help choose material :( ). As mentioned in my post earlier, the Tailor's is a world of men. Women are lost here. As i looked at the picture again, i realised she didnt look as lost as she did in real life and that one of the couples was actually two guys. I remember them. The one in darker blue was speaking so loudly in a gu niang voice that was so irritating. As I see it now, he is wearing sneakers with pants and long sleeved shirt... gosh.. such a fashion disaster... these kind of people do not deserve to make the queue longer at the Tailor. They taint the masterpieces the Tailor ...urm.. tailors out on a daily basis.

Anyway, the dude in the studded Armani belt is my Tailor. He said it was dress down Saturday today. Haha.. Choice words from the Man once again.

Best Art Museums in the World

I'm not really an art fan but I'd like to be able to visit some of these some day.

TripAdvisor®, the world's largest travel community, today announced the top 10 art museums in the world, based on traffic to the attractions on tripadvisor.com.

1. Louvre Affair: Musee du Louvre, Paris, France

Once a fortified palace that was the home to kings of France, the Louvre is now the world's most famous museum, renowned for some of the finest pieces of art in the world, including the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa. According to one TripAdvisor traveler, "The world's greatest museum-from its Italian Renaissance Masters, to its Dutch Masters and the exquisite collection from Egypt's Pharaonic period. Each time I visit I always discover new treasures and I reacquaint myself with my favorites."

2. Religious Experience: Vatican Museums, Vatican City, Rome, Italy

Spanning nearly nine miles, the Roman Catholic Church's Vatican collection is one of the largest and most stunning in the world. Estimated to have more than four million visitors annually, the Vatican museums feature the art of Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and, of course, Michelangelo's ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. As one TripAdvisor traveler commented, "The amount of history and art that is located here is mind-boggling, from the frescoes to the statues, virtually every nook and corner (even the floor) is a treasure."

3. Art in the Apple: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York

From Picasso to Pollock, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, on New York City's Museum Mile, is one of the world's largest museums with over two million pieces of artwork and enough variety for any enthusiast. Peruse the Greek sculptures, admire the armory or browse the 2,000 European paintings, all contained in a magnificent Beaux-Art façade building. As one TripAdvisor traveler said, "The building itself is a work of art. This would be a great place to spend a day alone!"

4. Grand Getty: J. Paul Getty Center, Los Angeles, California

The Getty features a remarkable collection, including the works of Van Gogh, Monet and Cezanne. The museum's structure is a piece of art in itself, and the grounds also feature beautiful gardens, and views of Los Angeles. As one TripAdvisor traveler offered, "Prepare to be spoiled-from the free admission, gorgeous gardens, views, good food, unsurpassed attention to detail, and oh yeah, the art-this place is one in a million!"

5. d'Orsay d'Light: Musee d'Orsay, Paris, France

Enjoy Van Gogh's "Starry Night," inside the Musee D'Orsay, a former train station built for the Universal Exhibition of 1900, with a dramatic glass roof. Specializing in 19th and 20th century artwork, the museum displays a striking collection of Impressionism, including famous works by Monet, Manet, Renoir, Van Gogh and Degas. As one TripAdvisor traveler said, "It is much less crowded than the Louvre and features wonderful pieces of art. The museum is just the right size to see everything, including famous painter Whistler and Van Gogh self-portraits."

6. Magnifico: Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy

Experience (or at least admire) Botticelli's "Birth of Venus," in the Uffizi Gallery, one of the oldest museums in the world featuring works from Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci in the heart of Florence. As one TripAdvisor traveler said, "The building was originally built several centuries ago to display the vast Medici art collection. This is an absolutely wonderful museum and worth a tour."

7. Millennium Museum: Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois

Located on Chicago's Loop, The Art Institute of Chicago boasts extensive Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collections, including more than 30 pieces by Monet. Visit France from afar through Monet's "Haystacks" and spending time "At the Moulin Rouge," one of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec's famous paintings. As one TripAdvisor traveler said, "Art buffs will be able to spend all day here! Their regular exhibit is fabulous -- one of my personal favorites is 'Sunday in the Park.' They also usually have an impressive special exhibit, too."

8. Modern Mecca: Tate Modern, London, England

Enjoy the electric art at the Tate Modern, displayed in a former Bankside Power Station, with views of the Thames River and Millennium Bridge. Remember the "Forgotten Horizon," one of Dali's many masterpieces and part of one of the largest collections of Surrealism in the World. As one TripAdvisor member said, "It is a must see, both for its setting (along the Thames, housed in a defunct power plant) and its installations and stationary art collections."

9. Painter's Place: Prado Museum, Madrid, Spain

One of the largest and most impressive collections in the world, not surprisingly, the Prado Museum is most famous for its assortment of works from Spanish artists such as Goya, Velasquez, Murillo, and El Greco. As one TripAdvisor traveler said, "This is a first-class museum. Of course, the highlight is 'Las Meninas' but there is so much to see in this place."

10. Capital Culture: National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., the National Gallery of Art is comprised of an east and west building, and features a sculpture garden surrounding a large fountain. Modern art fans should head to the east building, where works by Jackson Pollock, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol are displayed. As one TripAdvisor traveler said, "For the art lover, it is paradise. Forget most of the other museums, spend a day or two in these galleries."

"These museums are truly destinations in themselves, as travelers could easily get lost in them for at least a day," said Michele Perry, director of communications for TripAdvisor. "This top 10 is a check list to see the very finest artwork in the world."

Tray

My mum suddenly had this extra tray. Gave it to me. Said can put ties and all.

I decided to bring it to my office. I got lots of storage space.

So here it is.. ties and my suit beside it. Underneath got a nicely folded white shirt in case suddenly got meeting.

I realise i only have blue and red ties... odd...

Thought

Early this morning in the office, I stood up from my seat. Deep in thought. Two of my colleagues saw me and remarked that I am always deep in thought.

I told them i was usually only pretending la. New at the job, so i must look like im always thinking.

But this morning, I told them, was different. I was troubled this morning. Cos of this.

My tissue box ran out of tissue :(

The day i nearly lost my car.. again..

I did some grocery shopping (read: Mr. Donuts, canned longan, batteries for my remote control, Pockey) today during lunch time.

I decided to put my purchases in my car lest my colleagues see my donuts and think/know im greedy.

Went to my car, noted that the yellow Porsche parked beside me is no longer there, inserted the key into the boot.

Couldn’t turn the key leh. Odd. Then I tried inserting the key in another way. Still cannot.

Tried again harder. Still cannot.

Then I checked the car license plate.

ARRRGH… this is not my car!!!! Dude, where’s my car!?@!@ It’s been stolen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shit.

I walked out of the lot… then I realized my car’s in the adjacent section. I felt so dumb. :(

As i walked back to my office, i thought i'd take a picture to show the similarity of both sections with the same model in the middle lot.

Tailor

I was bored today. Saw the shuttle bus at Suntec. Took it and went to my Tailor’s. I need a new suit cos I’m wearing suits like twice or thrice a week now.

There was a throng of people at my Tailor but since I was free, I decided to wait and see.

A tailor’s a place where a man feels at ease, I think. He’s not threatened by the bright lights and the big displays of Zegna and Huge Boss and Prada. It’s in this dingy shop filled with books and books of cloth samples, infused with the smell of incense that seem to remind you on an Indian shop and the occasional cigarette smoke smell when the tailor takes a secret and very illegal smoke in his back room.

It’s all men talk here. Straight collar or spread Windsor collar, normal cuffs or French cuffs, pocket or no pocket, two button cuffs or double barrel cuffs, panel buttons or flat buttons, darts at the back or.. no darts, boot leg or more boot leg, two-ply or three-ply, Egyptian cotton or Lora Piano. I know men here are well versed in the options they want for their shirts.

Size matters here. No doubt. If size didn’t matter, there wont be the Tailor.

Today size and options collided. This customer asked the Tailor for the length of his collar where the back is.

“1.5 inches”

“Can I have it a little longer?

“How about 1 and 5/8 inch?”

“Hmm.. 1.5 or 1 and 5/8?”

The bugger thought about it for 5 minutes before deciding. I kid you not. Then he asked about the collar at the front part.

“3.5 inches”

“Is this standard?”

“Can be a bit longer.. 3 and 5/8 inch?”

This time, he decided 3.5 inches was good enough immediately. Then he paid and left.

And then, he came back 10 minutes later.

“You sure 3.5 inches is fine?”

............................

When it was my turn, I told the Tailor I wanted a good one. Gave me some books and I made my selection. Quoted me S$1,350. What the......

“I thought your wedding mah cos you said you want good one”

In the end, I settled for something less than good....

Castaway

I noted a wrapped Mont Blanc box in my boss's office for some time now.

I think today he opened it.

He came to my desk and asked me if i wanted it. Then he walked away.

I opened it and saw that it was a notebook thingy. Kind of like wat reporters in the 50s would use. I dont know what i'll use it for. Anyone?

Why can't Hillary and Obama just form a GRC?

Interesting article...muahahhahahahaah

Why can't Hillary and Obama just form a GRC?

By JAMIE EE

TO many Singaporeans, the ongoing US presidential elections may well seem to be a mindboggling process. After all, elections have always been a pretty straightforward thing for us - one public holiday, one vote and done deal. The only primary we know is the kind of school our voting is done in. There's no need to figure out what a caucus is, how come super delegates are better than delegates, or ponder the notion that Barack Obama is better liked than Hillary Clinton because he looks better in pantsuits.

Also, from a Singaporean point of view, it's hard to understand why an African-American man, a woman and Anglo-Saxon male even need to campaign against each other by appealing to different demographics. Why, in our country, they would have teamed up and formed the perfect GRC.

Then again, we're probably a simpler people. We don't like complicated politics. We have more practical things to think about - like deciding whether to go for the refundable or non-refundable CPF Life Scheme. Not to mention figuring out how many people we like enough to want to sacrifice a higher monthly payout just so that they can get all the unused money and interest when we kick the bucket.

Besides, there are other things to wonder about, like who will be the next starlet to appear in Edison Chen's photo gallery. Or exactly what happened to cause the wife of Venture Corp chairman Wong Ngit Liong to allegedly slap the SIA stewardess who was trying to serve her husband. Imagine if Michelle Obama had been on Hillary's 'Hil Force One' campaign plane and heard the former first lady dissing Obama by saying 'thank you for choosing the crew with the most experience' - maybe she would have slapped Hillary and said 'How dare you talk (about) my husband!'

Yes, Singaporeans have a lot to learn about American politics, and why much of it can't be translated into the local context. Like, why can't we devote entire planes just to go campaigning? Never mind that maybe the plane can only fly from Changi to Seletar Airport. It'd be a heck of a lot more cool than campaigning from a lorry with just a bullhorn. Even if you're allowed to use the bullhorn later to frighten unsuspecting people walking past.

And maybe the next time we have elections here, we could have really fancy balls to raise money. And have top local chefs prepare sumptuous buffets, with people dressed in tuxedos and ball gowns listening to political speeches. It would be a darn sight better than fried beehoon at community centres or getting bitten by mosquitoes in a rain-soaked open field with only cold curry puffs as snack options.

I suppose it probably wouldn't do to have politicians' spouses talking about their other halves being smelly in the morning or forgetting to keep the butter, like Michelle Obama did, to her husband's detriment. But maybe some little nuggets like a secret fondness for laksa breakfasts or secret fears that wearing white makes them look fat?

OK, fine. So elections American-style aren't likely to make their way here anytime soon. We'll just have to get our ya-yas from watching Hillary and company battle it out over the next few months. Then again, there's also the Malaysian elections coming up. Now that's another one that we can't figure out, but it'll still be fun to watch nonetheless.

CNY

Of all the holidays, I hate the one i dislike the most is Chinese New Year.

There's a constant squabble on which side of the family to go first, then second day.

No shops are open for any shopping to get away from it all.

Too much new year goodies that make you fat.

Everyone has different schedules that make arranging for mahjong so difficult.

Nothing nice to watch on TV. You get to a certain age before Stephen Chow ceases to be funny. It happened to me when i was 15.

There used to be a need to buy new clothes. Ang paos received used to be more than money spent on clothes. Then it became lopsided. This year i didnt spend a single cent on new clothes. Apparently this year, carrying a packet of bak kwa makes you more attractive than a nice shirt.

I hope for Sunday soon... got badminton.. YAY!

Why?

Have you ever wondered:

1. How come your scalp can be oily but you have dry hair?

2. How come your have an oily outer skin and dry inner skin?

Why does God make life so difficult? It's not enough just working hard and trying your best. Once in a while or once a year, a spanner is thrown into the works and your world unravels into a disarray.

Lessons

Today I learnt:

1. My code to enter into the Xerox machine to photocopy stuff.

2. I learnt where i can find where my color printouts will turn up from one of the four public printers in the office.

3. I filled in my stationery requisition form to procure stationery.

3. I found out where to find paper. Although there's a black and white printer on my table, I dont know where the paper is stored. I always stole from other people's printers or stole from the copier machine. Or I waited till people filled up my printer with paper.

4. I binded documents for the first time in 2 years. Didnt really know how to bind liao.. Pulled the thing damn hard then someone told me it was electronic. Damn dumb.

Office

I'm really still trying to settle in to the whole larger office atmosphere. It's been one month already but out of that, i travelled for 2.5 weeks.

I just realised that I was the only person in the entire company in my department. The two people I report to are high up the food chain. So basically i dont report my daily whereabouts to anyone. In fact, when i went to the US for two weeks, my colleagues thought I quit. Then when i was in Bangkok, they thought i was out for meetings for two days!@#!?

I'm like a lone ranger.

Cos I'm the only one. There was much confusion about my logistics. They're going to switch my email address to another domain and therefore change my namecards. They're going to de-boss my namecards, so that it's more chio. (Just for the uninitiated, de-boss doesnt mean remove my boss, but it's the opposite of emboss, or rather emboss downwards/inwards). They're changing my travel policy to business class for travel of more than 4 hours! w00t! So happy. I think it's a good balance between the short-economy flights and long-business flights.

No more Tiger Airways! YAY!

The other thing about being the only one is that no one asks me out for lunch. Which is fine with me. There're a ton of food places where i work now so i can just go wherever I want.

WHAT??!@?

I just read that we have a new Chief of Traffic Police.

It's a lady.

My goodness.. how can they let a species which has a lower pre-disposition to drive even properly to be Chief of Traffic Police??? Cause more traffic more likely, like her counter-parts.

Trust and Thrust

I was in Bangkok for a meeting with lawyers. I was there to shadow my boss who flew in from US at 8am that morning and left at 4pm. Siong man.

As I sat through the meeting, going through pages and pages of legal documents and hearing my and the other side trying to argue each other's points and trying to gain the upper ground, I thought that all these legal things just arose cos something bad happened long ago before in another land and another time and now to prevent such an eventuality from hurting either sides too much, we wrap ourselves with long paragraphs of the English language written in passive voice so that we feel safe.

It was an educational meeting but one that left me drained. Soon, I'd be doing this when I'm more up to it. Phew.

Bangkok

It's been some time since I blogged. I've been busy at work and over the weekend I was glad to be stoning at home while I had the time.

Just a little on my Bangkok trip, used the Budget Terminal for the first time. It's sucha spartan affair, it's actually quite depressing really. Bleah.

Everything's like one or even two grades lower than Changi.. the shops, the toilets and there are even more automated immigration gantries, presumably to reduce labour costs. Even the money changer bank (RHB Bank) is a lesser known bank as opposed to the UOB and AMEX at Changi. There was a dedicated place for smokers as well with a door leading to it. The door led outside. That's it. The smoking zone is just simply outside the building. I dont know if I was the only one who thought it was .... just dumb..

But the weird thing is they provide free internet with tables, with power points, with LAN cables and relatively comfy chairs. I was happy and was able to do some work there as I went to the airport damn early.

I went early as it was my first time and I thought I have to go early to chope seats for budget flights. And I was really early - 2 hours before my flight. Even the people queuing in for check-in were the questionable sort. Haha.. I was glad i changed out of my suit and donned my polo tee and jeans. The queue-ers were scruffy and dingy (doubt you can use this to describe people but well..). There was even an angmo guy with a Thai looking young girl. So disgusting. =( And they gave me odd looks when I used my Blackberry in the queue.

The damn plane was late by an hour. As I stood in the queue, i cursed and swore at my luck and wondered how did paying less for a flight translate to incessant delays for flights. I was understand if the seats are lousy and the service is shittier but does the pilot really walk slower to the plane and/or fly slower? So odd.

I was glad to have no one seated in my three seater but the seats only reclined like probably 5% backwards. What the hell...I realised Tiger Airways only provide the crew with tee shirts and not pants cos they all wore different pants. And I realised how they kept costs low.. they hired kids! Many of the "stewards" looked like they left their Macdonald's counters to come work here. There should be a law against having a 16 yr old kid explain how to evacuate during an emergency. And the guy couldnt even pronounce "de..di..de..cated" (dedicated) properly over the PA system.

I was glad I had airport transfer to whisk me far and fast away when I landed. And I was glad my company booked me in a club room at the Conrad. And they pre-booked my airport transfer back to the airport as well. The car was one of the new S-Class Mercs I think (Not very sure as it's not a segment I look at a lot). But the backseats were adjustable and even had massage. At the risk of being a swakoo, I took a picture. Haha

On the way back, my (for one hour) Merc pulled into entrance 2 of the airport where Tiger was supposed to be and i got so many gawks and stares by scruffy looking australian backpackers. Haha.. it was a funny sight. I gained no glory really as I was also taking Tiger with them but it was funny.

The boarding pass on the way back was a very laughable affair. It was a simple piece of paper with many empty fields. When you check in, they'll print your name on a tiny strip of paper and use a scotch tape to stick your name strip on the said piece of boarding pass. And your seat number is "generated" from a handheld label machine and then stuck on the boarding pass as well.

Thankfully the flight back was uneventful and Gucci had a 50% sale so I got a tie. :)
